V&A National Schools Challenge - Year 9 Finalists

Held annually, students in years 7, 8 and 9 are given the opportunity to experience the power of design and technology in solving some of the world's biggest problems. Students can choose to explore one of three contextual challenges inspired by the collections and exhibitions at the V&A museum that ask critical questions about the issues shaping our world. Within their chosen context, the student teams had the opportunity to discover real and relevant problem to solve – at home, in school, or locally – leading to a new design solution.

We looked at the title 'WEAR' where the students needed to consider the fact that we wear clothes for protection, warmth or to make a statement. They had to consider different people in their local community and consider innovative solutions for what we wear and why.

A third of the year 9 cohort took part in the Innovate challenge at DACA and one team were successful in being selected for the final taking place in London in March, the students are Elliot Hind, Callum Preston and Warren Miah who came up with an innovative idea of a body warmer made from locally sourced material from the company Senator who create office furniture. Their body warmer design was created for rough sleepers, but instead of being padded, has a series of large zip pockets where the wearer can store extra clothing that will help to keep them warmer, and protect their belongings from theft.

To be in with a chance of winning the competition, the students will need to present their idea to a panel of industry experts and designers. Good luck!
