Recipe 4 Health Award - GOLD

DACA awarded Gold recipe for Health award.

Recipe 4 Health is Blackburn with Darwen Council’s Environmental Health team working in partnership with Public Health and the healthy living team.

They are working with food businesses to try and improve the amount of healthier choices on the menu. These food businesses include cafes, restaurants, pubs, sandwich shops, takeaways, work/prison canteens, conference centres and children's nurseries, schools and elderly care homes.

Officers are working with businesses to help and advise about healthy options, offering free menu analysis and advice on allergies labelling, whilst helping them to add healthier dishes to their menus, reducing harmful fat content, salt and sugars.

The award is free to businesses and available on three levels - Bronze, Silver and Gold - linked to the Government’s Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, The aim is not to force people to eat healthier options, but to make it easier to find healthy options when eating out for those who want them.

The award incorporates the following areas:

  1. Clean and fair: ensures that the business meets legislative requirements enforced by trading standards and environmental health so that foods are accurately described and safe to eat.

  2. Allergen/alcohol awareness: ensures businesses know which ingredients are allergenic and how to deal with those ingredients to prevent a customer having an allergic reaction. It also ensures businesses know the law relating to alcohol sales and encourages responsible drinking.

  3. Healthy eating: encourages businesses to use fresh ingredients, prepare them in a healthy manner and clearly sign-post healthier options on menus.

  4. Environmental focus: deals with issues of reducing food miles, resource efficiency and responsible waste recycling and disposal.
